Stop MZOs. Stop Sprawl. Grow the Greenbelt.

Across the province developers and land speculators are lobbying local governments to put sprawl-style development on precious natural areas, farmland, and water sources. They’re using the COVID-19 crisis as a smoke screen saying these developments are necessary to get us through the crisis. And they’re convincing local and provincial governments to use an emergency-only tool, Minister's Zoning Orders (MZOs), to ignore proper planning and environmental protection. And most recently, they’ve convinced the Province to take away the ability of Conservation Authorities to stop bad development.

We need to stop them.

Local governments must focus on protecting the natural spaces, farmland and precious water sources we deeply depend on. They must stop sprawl and stop requesting the Province to use MZOs. Instead they must protect farmland and natural areas by adding them to the Greenbelt.

With your help, together with thousands of others across Ontario, we can make this happen as part of the Province’s plans to recover from the COVID-19 crisis.

Now it’s time to tell your local Council you want a COVID Recovery Plan that stops using MZOs, stops sprawl and grows the Greenbelt.

Tell your Councillors and Mayor to:

  • Resist using MZOs and tell the Province you oppose the proposed changes to the Conservation Authorities Act because they fast-track sprawl-style development, sidestep public consultation and override policies intended to protect Ontario’s natural areas, water sources and farmland.

  • Pass a Council resolution that any COVID-19 recovery plan must commit to stopping sprawl and protecting natural spaces, farmland and freshwater sources, and supporting efforts to bring these important spaces under some type of protection from future development.

This campaign is a collaborative effort of over 100 groups across Ontario working together through the Ontario Greenbelt Alliance (OGA). This action page is hosted by Ontario Nature, a member of the OGA. To learn more, please visit greenbeltalliance.ca.
